Jenna & Joe’s engagement photography session Hartford, Connecticut Jenna & Joe Jenna and Joe are getting married next month in beautiful Mystic, CT at the historic Seamen’s Inne , located on the Mystic River.  They love boating, and the quaint town of Mystic, so the location was an easy choice for them!  After knowing each other for over four years, Joe proposed to Jenna in front of all their family at his mothers birthday party, and Jenna admits he was a nervous wreck!  Jenna and Joe are a really beautiful couple, fun and very relaxed!  We met up at Elisabeth Park in West Hartford for their engagement session, and all had so much fun!  Jenna’s lovely mother joined us as well, it was great to have an extra pair of hands and eyes, thank you!  Elizabeth Park is such a treasure, the park encompasses 102 acres and boasts many garden areas, pathways, greenhouses, lawns, a picnic grove, a pond and recreation areas.  The center piece of Elizabeth Park is the two and a half acre garden of some 15,000 rose bushes. It is the oldest municipally operated rose garden in the country and has about 800 varieties of roses, the perfect location for Jenna and Joe’s shoot!  We truly enjoyed spending the evening with them, and can’t wait to photograph their wedding next month! Here’s the second and final part of my favourite pics for April. Hope you like them.

1. Phil & Sara
This was a great wedding for me – as it was held in my church and I know the bride and groom (and quite a number of the guests) personally. Congratulations Phil & Sara!!

2. Darren & Laura
I’m obviously posting way to many pictures on this article – can’t help myself! Sorry if its a little slow to load! The 24th April took me all the way down to Burren (near Warrenpoint). I’ve been to most hotels in Northern Ireland at this stage – but it was great to visit a new photograph location – ‘Domantine Conference Centre’ – I’ve posted some photographs below.

Getting Ready: The Winter Wedding

Over the last few years, I have noticed a real increase in the number of people getting married during the winter. In particular, Christmas and New Year weddings have blossomed. There are many reasons to get married in winter including:

  • Increased availability – get married more quickly by choosing a winter date, especially mid-week
  • Hotel rates are sometimes cheaper – honeymoons may also be less expensive but you typically have to go further for sun.
  • Photographs have a distinct winter feel – with crisp sunlight and beautiful reds and greens
  • Getting holidays from work is often easier – especially if you are a teacher

I often get asked about the feasibility of winter weddings, so here’s a brief article on preparing for a winter wedding. With a little thought, winter weddings are absolutely great – indeed I got married on a cold January’s day myself!

1. Wrap up warm!
Many wedding dresses are strapless with short arms – not always so practical for a cold winters day. Brides – look for matching coats or wraps, men – ensure you hire a warm suit. You can always take a layer off should you become too warm!

One brides uses a small coat to good effect (Photo: Peter Thomas Photography)

2.  Location Location Location
While a professional wedding photographer can make the most out of any location and still produce great results, here are a few ideas for your winter wedding. Often hotels with open fireplaces keep the guests happy and make ideal photograph locations. Between November and February there is a good chance the weather won’t be good, so think about the practicalities of indoor photographs. Is there somewhere for group photographs? Are there any unique features? If you’ve already booked your location don’t worry – a professional photographer can make alot out of very little!

3. Check out the Christmas Decorations
Hotels often put Christmas decorations up early – so be sure to ask what the hotel does for the festive season. I often use christmas decorations as seasonal backdrops for my pictures, but you may regard early november as too early for Christmas! If you are having a civil ceremony in the hotel, be sure to ask about decorations in the room.

4. Timing
After the clocks change in October, there is limited time to get your photographs taken outdoors. As a general rule of thumb, light starts to fade around 3.30pm. Having said that, you might be fortunate and have a nice, bright day. If  you want the majority of your photographs outdoors, its often best to schedule your wedding early. 12 noon is a popular time. In late February/March, you will have until about 4.30pm before the light fades. If an early wedding isn’t possible, don’t worry – your photographer can take a few photographs outdoors and leave the rest for inside. If your wedding is later, you might consider allowing your photographer to attend the ‘brides house’ before hand to get some outdoor photographs of the bride, bridesmaids and parents.

5. A Cuppa Tea goes a long way
Your guests will feel the cold too – so why not provide a tea or coffee mid-afternoon. Hot punch can work well during the festive season.

6. Think about the bridal party
You will hopefully be pumped with joy and adrenaline – chances are you won’t feel the cold too much! But spare a thought for your bridal party. Ask your photographer if he/she can take the bridal party photographs first, allowing them to go inside quickly. Don’t have them standing around outside for long periods of time. Be especially aware of page-boys and flower girls. It is often a good idea to bring along normal coats which can be removed for the photographs.

7. And finally…

Favourite Pics: April 2009 (part 1)

As part of the regular ‘Favourite Pics’ series, here are the first batch of my favourite pictures, all taken during April 2009. There are plenty more for part 2 – but I need to wait until the couples are back from honeymoon and give permission!

1. Deborah & Joe
Really enjoyed my time with Deborah & Joe  - here are a few black & whites. I really like this contrasty look. It was also good to catch up with Deborah’s sister who’s wedding I did last year.

0035

0017

2. Louise & Ryan
Another great day at the Dunadry – and probably the most organised couple in the world – the album has already gone to print!!

0025
Above: This is the sort of documentary photo I love to take. It probably won’t make its way into the album, but its a great memory of a bridesmaid opening a gift she just received from the bride.

0009

Above: the choir make a guard of honour on the way out of the church. Another nice documentary style shot.

0021a

Above: making the most of the rain – the trusty Peter Thomas umbrella comes into action!

3. Jackie & Joanne
My most local wedding recently (Whitehead & Greenisland), we had good fun down in HazelBank park. Great couple.

0015

0205

Above: men are often forgotten at weddings – and the bride gets all the attention. So at every wedding, I’m now trying to get a few really good pictures of the men. This one is in an interesting location – but I love the urban feel from the old grafitti.

0023

Above: the first dance. Totally unscripted – they look totally in love!

0016

Above: just to show you a fun storybook page layout. Makes you smile – job done!

4. Ian & Lorna
From a local wedding to the opposite extreme – I went through an entire tank of petrol at this wedding in Limavady & Ballybofey! A lovely service and a great location in Browns Gardens in Limavady. We just about beat the rain!

0021

0023a

Above: A little bit of a ‘quirky’ image in panoramic – but I have to say I quite like it!

So there you go – my favourite pictures in April 2009. They are all available for viewing at http://www.peterthomasphotography.com . Hope you like them – let me know! Part 2 coming in a week or two!

The Famous Little Things: The Box

I regularly get asked questions such as ‘what makes you different’ or ‘what makes your packages attractive’?. So this is the first article in a short series which takes a look at answering those questions. Its not based on my perceptions – rather I’ve based it on a simple premise – things which people mention when they ring me up.

Firstly, people often mention ‘The Box’. This little box isn’t special in itself, but I have to say that brides simply love whats inside. Let me explain.

box-1

1. 6×4 prints of all the pictures.
I believe that couples should have their photographs in their hands. They shouldn’t have to load up a CD or play a DVD – the good old fashioned way is the best. I print all the photographs (normally 300-350). Brides comment that it helps them when picking their album – its simply easier to pick your favourite photographs when you can put them out on a table and compare. Secondly, after their album is picked most brides put these 6×4prints into a small album of there own.

box-2

2. Album mock-up
Relatively unique to Peter Thomas Photography, we spend a great deal of time creating a mock album-layout for you. Its simply our ideas as to what will look good. Its a great start and usually speeds up the process. Of course, you are welcome to change it as much or as little as you like!

box-3

3. The DVD Collection
At the moment, the Box includes 2 DVDs. Firstly (and for a limited time only), we are including the actual files on DVD. This allows you to do your own reprints should you wish to. It also allows you to email photos to friends, put them on facebook – whatever you want! Secondly, we include a DVD slideshow of all your photographs to music. Many couples choose a few songs- often the first dance and a few songs that mean something special.

box-4

Conclusion
So there you go – you’ve been introduced to The Box! It’s lovely to get something into your hand when you get back from honeymoon. While you choose your album photographs, you’ll still have something worthwhile to show friends and family.

Getting Ready: Signing the Register

If there is one photograph that almost always makes its way into a wedding album, its the signing of the register. It captures that moment where a couple legally become man and wife!

Let me start by saying that when it comes to planning something like the Signing of the Register, there are no rights and no wrongs. Some churches are quite prescriptive and so you may not have a choice. You may also want the table to look a particular way.

Photography by Peter Thomas Photography

The following is simply a few things to look out for, which will make your photographers job a little easier. Of course, a full-time, professional photographer will be able to make a good photograph out of most situations.

So here goes:

1. Watch out for large floral arrangements.

While a large floral arrangement on the table may look good and blend in with the rest of the colours, it can often hide the registry document. If you have flowers, they are often best placed off to the side (like above). If they are in the middle, the congregation often can only see the bride and a large bunch of flowers. The pen and register are completely hidden. This forces the photographer to stand on a chair or take the photograph at an unusual angle.

2. Buy a decent pen!
This is probably one of the most important documents you will ever sign! Quite often the minister / clergy / priest will bring a pen – and you would be surprised how often it is a cheap biro! You may wish to purchase a good quality pen, at least for the photographs. I always try to carry a good quality, silver pen with me to use for the photographs.

3. The Table
There is some personal preference in this – but I find that the best signing of the register photographs are taken when the bride is seated at a table. Many churches do the signing of the register while standing at a bench. This is fine but just something for you to think through.

4. Location
This one is entirely up to you! Some people like to sign the register in the main church, allowing the congregation to watch and take photographs. Others prefer to take a breather and sign in a side room. I’m not going to outline the pros and cons of both – its a personal decision.

5. The Background
Wherever you decide to sign the register, just take a moment and look at the background. Is it a pleasing background? Is there something in the way that could be removed? Often these photographs are taken in minister’s offices – and there are often posters, photocopiers, computers etc. in the background. Often a small change in the position of the table can make for a much nicer photograph.

A plain room off to the side of the church – yet a pleasing image. The bride is relaxed – note the quality pen and brides bouquet off to the side! Photograph by Peter Thomas Photography

And finally….
Don’t worry! Ask your photographer for direction and be safe in the knowledge that a professional photographer has probably seen it all before. Remember that the Signing of the Register is only a small part of the day – so no point in stressing too much about it!

Blooming Daffodils!

When I twittered last week that I was going out to take a few pictures of daffodils for an upcoming calendar, a few people asked to see the pictures. Well I’m not going to post the one that is probably going into the calendar, but here are a few.

They were all taken using natural light, a reflector and/or diffuser and my trusty Nikon D3. The location is Loughshore, Jordanstown.

Getting Ready: Coming up the Aisle

In my opinion one of the most challenging photographs to take at a wedding is of the bride coming up the aisle. Churches can often be dark, flash photography is sometimes banned – and all this while shooting a moving object. Of course, a professional photographer will be able to work with whatever the conditions, but here are a few hints to help.

1. Walk in Slow motion!
No matter how long the aisle is, walk slowly! I’d recommend walking at approximately half-speed. It may seem slow, but it will give your photographer time to take a few pictures. It will also give your guests (and future husband!) more time to admire you.

2. Organise the Bridesmaids
Bridesmaids usually walk down the aisle first, although there is no set rule. Whichever order you choose, make sure they also walk slowly.

Leave a good space between bridesmaids
Most importantly, think about the timing between bridesmaids. If they are too close your photographer will struggle to take a picture of the middle bridesmaid. As a general rule of thumb, the 1st bridesmaid should be three-quarters up the aisle before the second starts to walk up the aisle. For impact, it is often best for the bride and her father to wait until all the bridesmaids have reached the front.

Think about where they should stand when they arrive
At the rehearsal, have a practice run and make sure the bridesmaids know where to stand when they arrive at the altar. Make sure they aren’t blocking the videographer!

Help the kids
Flowergirls and page boys are great at weddings. Depending on their age, you may wish to have a bridesmaid accompany them up the aisle.

3. Smile!
Enough said!

Just about to go up the aisle! Photograph by Peter Thomas Photography

Just about to go up the aisle! Photograph by Peter Thomas Photography

4. Don’t forget the orders of service!
A minor detail, but you may wish to ensure that whoever is officiating the service has orders of service for the bridesmaids and bride. There’s nothing worse than signing a hymn with no words!

5. And the same applies when you are coming back down again!
All of these suggestions equally apply when the bride and groom are coming back down the aisle. It is often best for the bridesmaids to wait until the bride and groom have completed their journey down the aisle before they start. This means that your photographs won’t have other members of the bridal party in the background.

And finally…
Coming up the aisle is an important but small part of your day. The hints above are just suggestions – if you don’t get time to think it through don’t worry – just walk slowly and enjoy!

Happy Mother's Day

To my mother:

God gave me the best mother He possibly could have. She is a Godly woman who loves the Lord and I am blessed to call her Mom.  I do not have a single memory of my Mom showing anything other than kindness and love to me or my five siblings. She sacrificed more times than we could ever begin to count.  She home-schooled and taught each of us from day one, and continues to teach us in many ways. I love you Mom!

To my wife:

You are an amazing woman who demonstrates love to me and our children every day.  Your faith and love for God is evident and I am blessed to be married to you.  Thank you for loving us all and caring for us endlessly – know it’s not easy and you work far harder than I ever do.  Amy wanted to tell you, “I love you because you make good food for us” and Austin says, “I love you because I want to keep you!  We love you!

Happy Mother’s Day to the two women who shaped my life and made it infinitely better – I am forever in your debt.

Love,
Michael

Open Mike Night #21 – Don't Give Up

I get a lot of requests for internships, possible jobs, and some oddball stuff here and there. I wish there was a way to help more people get started in photography but there aren’t enough hours in the day.

Lake Tahoe Photographer Michael Escalera photographs a lonely road in the Nevada desert.

One email I just received really stuck out to me. It’s a college student on the east coast who desperately wants to be a full time photographer, but it seems the cards are stacked against him. In all of it’s honesty, here is what I wrote him…

Right now people in this economy are leery, which includes photographers hiring assistants. Unfortunately, you may very well have to work for experience only, and bug someone for the job.

Are there any photographers in the area whose work you like? Present the idea to him or her so that it’s risk free – you work for them and they get an awesome assistant. Pitch it to them as “you don’t even have to pay me until you see what I’m capable of. If you like the way I work then you can pay me what you think is fair.” We’ve all done it, and the beauty of that is you’ll get stress free experience which is invaluable.

Don’t get discouraged. Yes, the market is saturated but there is always room for people with passion. Demonstrate that you have it and you’ll be farther ahead than most of the hacks out there.

Keep your chin up, and above all, keep shooting.

The picture of this road makes me think about the journey each of us are on. At times it seems like the horizon stretches on forever, your body feels permanently attached to the car seat, and you think you’ll never make it to your destination.

Now stop and think about the people who actually built this road with their hands.  They didn’t race past the landscape at 70mph.  They had to work the land removing obstacles in their path, and then inch by inch create a road for future generations to use.

Pursuing your passion can be a long and sometimes lonely road.  It won’t be quick and it may not be comfortable.  But others have helped to pave the way for you and point you in the right direction…don’t give up!

Best Wishes,
Michael

Photo of the Week Goes to Next Exit Photography

I have to say Next Exit Photography is one of my absolute favorite photographers. They definitely make my top ten list, and if I was choosing a photographer from my wedding they would be one that I would seriously consider. I could have chosen just about any of Cat and Adi’s photos for photo of the week but I had to go with just one.

While stumbling around the internet I came across Chris Austin Photography and was very impressed with what I saw. There were quit a few photos I loved, but I really loved the perspective in this engagement shot (It doesn’t hurt that the couple is absolutely beautiful)

This was the most recent wedding we photographed. Funny enough, Lisa was one of the first people to contact us when we were just getting our wedding business up and running. We were really happy that we had the opportunity to photograph their wedding, they are wonderful people and it was a truly great event.

Rosie and Roland were a wonderful couple who had a beautiful ceremony and reception at The Oasis in Austin. The Oasis has finally finished rebuilding after the fire on their decks several years ago and its better than ever now! It was a really fun wedding and they did everything with style…Rosie arrived in a Rolls-Royce, they toasted with Dom Perignon, the ceremony overlooked the lake, it was great!
