Of Cabbages and Kings (and Underthings)…

Source So the time has come, Miss Pug said, to talk of many things Of shoes , and ships , and sealing wax , of cabbages (or artichokes ) and kings… or UNDERTHINGS! The process of planning a wedding is akin to falling down the rabbit hole with Alice—a little world filled with twists, turns and surprises that you never knew existed until you became a planning bride.

Chronicles Of A Shoe-Obsessed Bride, Part 2

Now that my shoe obsession has been properly established , you can fully appreciate the story of how I found the perfect wedding shoes that weren’t. Upon getting engaged last March, the shoe search began. Around the same time I also began looking for wedding inspiration pictures, and looked at everything tagged “purple” on TheKnot.com .

The Engagement Photos

Mr. Lace and I looked high and low for a great, yet budget-friendly photographer. After looking through recommendations of friends, combing through wedding websites and reading and following blogs, I was ready to give up and just settle for a DECENT photographer, despite the fact that many of our married friends said to make sure we got a good photographer no matter the cost

The Dress…

While I wait for my pro pictures, I decided that I needed to finish blogging about my wedding planning, since life had gotten a bit crazy in the past couple of months… so here I go! Some girls dream of their wedding gowns their whole lives. Most women search until they find THE wedding gown of their dreams and want to wear it as long as they can. I am not one of those girls.

Let’s Add Another DIY to the List, Shall We? (Or: My Veil)

I never really thought too much about veils, even after trying on wedding dresses. I narrowed down what I didn’t like pretty quickly as consultants tried to get me to don giant poofy pieces of tulle: I didn’t want a blusher, or any added volume at the top.

Singing in the Rain

I don’t know if you’ve heard, but we Angelenos are facing some uncharacteristically inclement weather this week. Luckily, I am prepared! In 2009, I think we totaled about three days of rain (two of which you could probably characterize as a drizzle), but I went ahead and ordered some rain boots on Zappos in the spring anyway since my campus practically flooded from it and ruined my favorite ballet flats. (By the way, I am still in mourning and trying to determine whether there is a cause of action against the designer of the parking structure for negligent infliction of emotional distress… no?).

Dress Flowers

Alright, time to experiment with dress flowers! The first attempt was from a book I have called Kokoro No Te , but it’s a little too pointy… The book example used a lighter fabric, and was only a few inches tall. This one is, well, nearly a foot and made with canvas! Next I went online to look at different DIY flowers, and walked away with a ton of tutorials: Rosette – (tutorial source) Fabric Flower – (tutorial source) Geisha Flower – (tutorial source) Fabric Rose – (tutorial source) Martha’s Silk Flower – (tutorial source) I went with the rosette for now, since it seemed like a good match for the bumpy skirt. Ta da! I did cheat a little though

A Denver Wedding with DIY Charm, II

So let’s recap: a killer DIY wedding with all the warm, personalized comforts of home.  Sweet, in-between-the-moments photography by the amazing Tec Petaja and playful equestrian, forest touches to boot.  And for the record, I want to dye my hair EXACTLY the color of this bride’s hair! I just can’t get enough of these photos… More from Alicia, the bride: The thing that still makes me catch my breath when I think back on the day, were the songs that were performed during our ceremony.

Dress Mock-Up: Skirt

The fun part of the dress: the pick-ups! I just love the poofy-froofiness of a big skirt (though trust me, canvas isn’t the froofiest of materials). Here she is, in a variety of different angles: and my personal favorite… One interesting thing is – Mr

My Feelings on “The Dress:” My Inspiration

Ahhhh, dress shopping. As little girls, we dream about the day that we can enter a bridal salon and try on beautiful dresses for our wedding day. It is supposed to be an amazing experience… and sheesh… we place such high expectations on it, don’t we?

WDOTD: Fairytale & Fantasy

We recently got an email from a frequent reader who asked why we didn’t choose more fairytale and fantasy wedding gowns for our “Wedding Dress of the Day” series. In our efforts to be practical, we do NOT want to neglect the whimsical options out there for our brides who like to think outside-of-the-box.

A Love Affair with Ruffles

Whether they adorn the entire skirt or simply add flounce to a neckline, ruffles add a hint of glam and romance like nothing else.  Because a ruffle is simply an addition or gather of fabric, there is an elegant continuity in the way it embellishes a bridal gown…  With ruffles making a huge comeback this season, sigh, it must be love! Green Wedding Tips: Wedding Dress!

Beautiful wedding dress! Photo from The Wedding Lens If you’re really into being green, there are TONS of green wedding tips out there. But sometimes it’s not doing everything, it’s just doing something. If you’re trying to be green, consider being green with your wedding dress (which, of course, doesn’t have to be the COLOR green – just get it or get one that is eco-friendly!) Consider a pre-owned dress.

The Ride of Our Lives: A Cinderella Story, Part 1

I relished in every single minute of the “prettifying” part of my wedding day like it the sleepover party of my dreams. Surrounded by my favorite ladies (sisters Dawn and Kim, future sister-in-law Cathy, bestie Mapo and my mom), getting the royal treatment, feeling full of joy, relaxed and openhearted, my body buzzing with anticipation. It was a fairy tale transformation that made me feel like a bad-ass princess, ready to take on the day, find my prince charming and waltz our way into our happily-ever-after.

Retro Recon

Thanks to the fabulous Stephanie James Couture, I finally found my wedding dress groove: retro 1950s styling . YAY! I quickly researched how much a SJC dress would put a dent in the Pretzel purse, and YAY became NAY. Remember, I have a list of things I vowed not to do during wedding planning and “I won’t spend an arm and a leg on a wedding dress” was on the list.

You Mean My Dress Can Be Short?

We’ve talked about my feelings of “Bride FAIL” when initially looking at wedding dresses. I told you that I felt little better when I found sleek, modern, build-it-yourself dresses . But I’ve gotta admit I still felt like a bridal fraud because it was the God’s-honest-truth that I could still care less about the dress—not just the process of shopping for the dress—I could care less about THE DRESS
