Bend Sinister – The Same Things

Julie and I started working on a song today, tentatively titled Happy Friday.  So far, we have “It’s Fridayyyyyyyyyyy” down on paper; We will keep everyone posted on where this goes.  I’ve got a great track to close out the work week this afternoon from the Vancouver progressive/indie-rock band Bend Sinister .  Since forming in 2001, the band has put out 4 releases, including their sophomore full-length release Stories Of Brothers, Tales Of Lovers  in October of 2008 ; The Same Things can be found on said release.  On a side-note, Bend Sinister played the Sled Island festival in Calgary this year, but Julie and I opted to see The Breeders instead; Perhaps we will catch them next year. Oh hang up your gloves now man And take a day off You can spend your whole life fighting But look at the cost Ohhhhh you sacrificed your life for human kind And in the end they end up leaving you behind And after all you know it will be the same things going down But you won’t be around Oh brother, you gotta hear me Take heed my words Don’t listen when those shepherds rant They steer you with the herds Ohhhhh you sacrificed your life for false ideals And those cats get fatter hording all the steals And after all you know it will be the same things going down But you won’t be around What more can I say man, without yelling in your ear But then you might not end up listening cus your just to smart to hear But you know that the same thing’s going down the same thing’s going down the same thing’s going down But you won’t be around Related posts: Human Highway – The Sound Arcade Fire – Intervention Tokyo Police Club – Box Stars – One More Night (Your Ex-Lover Remains Dead) Wintersleep – Weighty Ghost

Said the Whale – The Magician (Camilo)

Another tune tonight from the Vancouver-based indie-rock band Said the Whale .  The Magician (Camilo) is the opening track off the band’s most recent EP The Magician , released in May of this year; The song is also expected to be included on the band’s sophomore full-length effort Islands Disappear .  According to the band’s website , mixing of the new album will begin on August 17 with an expected release date of October 13.  On an interesting side-note, Islands Disappear is being produced by Howard Redekopp, who was behind previous Tegan and Sara and The New Pornographers releases. Honestly, I know you like to keep a mystery But there’s this girl I know who’s sad you see And I’d like to show her life ain’t always real Camilo that’s where you come in my friend Show me your secrets show me all of them I promise I won’t say a word again And as long as I’m alive I’ll be the best that I can be Ca-Ca-Ca-Camilo I need to see where you make that card go ‘Cus I got some questions about the world I know And about the difference between real and show Camilo Watch my eyes, put a coin in your hand now and squeeze real tight I’ll make both sides and so will you decide You’ll have complete control of your whole life Camilo that’s where you come in Be my assistant be my right hand man We’ll find a place between fact and fiction And as long as they don’t know we’ll be the masters of pretend Ca-Ca-Ca-Camilo I need to see where you make that card go ‘Cus I got some questions about the world I know And about the difference between real and show Camilo Caroline, I saw your disbelief you’re mystified Understandably, and so am I Let’s make like enemies and disappear Camilo I need to see where you make that card go ‘Cus I got some questions about the world I know And about the difference between real and show Camilo, Camilo Reviews: The Magician Related posts: Said the Whale – This City’s a Mess Human Highway – The Sound Winter Gloves – Let Me Drive The Dudes – Dropkick Queen of the Weekend Hey Rosetta! – Red Heart

The Rural Alberta Advantage – Don’t Haunt This Place

I heard today’s song on CBC Radio 3 while I was at the office today.  I noticed something really really good in Nils Edenloff’s (lead vocals) upper register that reminded me very much of Jeff Mangum ’s tone and delivery; Have a close listen to the lines around the 1:00 mark and compare it to Mangum’s vocal from In The Aeroplane Over The Sea .  Anyways, Don’t Haunt This Place comes from the Toronto indie-rock trio The Rural Alberta Advantage , and their debut full-length release Hometowns .  The song can be had as a free download from the audio section of the band’s website here .

Why? – Gemini (Birthday Song)

There are 57 days until this year’s  Polaris Music Prize gala, and still no invitation for BowlingStone.com; I’m still feeling pretty optimistic however.  I thought I would close out the week with another tune from the American indie/alt-rock/hip-hop band Why? .  The band seems to have this uncanny ability to exclusively create songs I can listen to 15 18 times a day, and not get tired of.  Gemini (Birthday Song) is off the band’s second studio album Elephant Eyelash , which was the first release from Why

Peaches – Talk to Me

I found out this morning that before Peaches became Peaches, she was an elementary school music and drama teacher; Thinking about 10 year old kids learning music from the now electronic/glam-rock star puts me in such a good mood.  Talk to Me  was released as the first single to Peaches’ fifth full-length album I Feel Cream , released in early May of this year.  The song was produced by the alt-rock/electronic ensemble Soulwax , who put out a ridiculously good remix of MGMT’s Kids which can be seen here . Why don’t you talk to me? im standin here alone i know youll never phone Why don’t you talk to me?

Why? – Eskimo Snow

With Why? ’s next album ( Eskimo Snow ) not slated for release until September of this year, I’m not entirely sure how this song made it’s way onto YouTube; Regardless, I am very very vibed to have stumbled across it.  Yoni Wolf, the man behind Why?, has described the upcoming release as “…the least hip-hop out of anything I’ve ever been involved with.”.  This is evident in today’s tune, as it lacks the beat and delivery typically associated with Why?

J Mascis and the Fog – Ammaring

After Sunday’s Dinosaur Jr. post , I decided I needed to start listening to J Mascis and the Fog again.  As I mentioned in the post, J Mascis and the Fog served as my introduction to musician J Mascis , and then to Dinosaur Jr.  Fortunately, I was able to track down a really sick version of one of my favorite songs from the band on YouTube.   Ammaring can be found on the J Mascis and The Fog debut release More Light; The album was one of the musical projects Mascis devoted his time to during the period between Dinosaur Jr.’s breakup and reuinion

Dinosaur Jr. – Over It

Late post tonight in an attempt to delay the inevitability of a new work week beginning tomorrow.  Tonight’s song comes from the American indie/alt-rock band Dinosaur Jr. , an all time favorite of mine.  Over It can be found on the band’s latest album Farm , released last month via the indie label Jagjaguwar ; Jagjaguwar is of course the label that was behind the re-release of Bon Iver ’s debut album For Emma, Forever Ago .  One of the things that I’m really digging about this track is how much it reminds of the J Mascis and the Fog  tune Same Day ; Oddly enough it was that song that first introduced me to Dinosaur Jr. even though it probably should have gone down the other way around.

Modest Mouse – Autumn Beds

I awoke this morning to a find a new track from Modest Mouse in my inbox, and Tom Watson with the 54-hole lead at the British Open on my TV;  It felt like a strange summertime Christmas morning where someone decided to put old home movies on.  If that ridiculously good simile didn’t make sense to anyone, let me know and I’ll break it down for you.  Autumn Beds is the third track on Modest Mouse’s upcoming EP No One’s First and You’re Next , set to be released this August.  The EP will feature unreleased tracks and B-sides from the indie/alt-rock band’s last two albums Good News for People Who Love Bad News  and We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank .

Non-Floral Friday: Candy Apple Centerpieces

Mighty readers, you have spoken, and Budget Bride follows suit! Based on the results of our recent poll , today’s Non-Floral Friday will once again center on centerpieces. And because I received an email specifically requesting that apples be addressed, well, that’s just what I’ll do! I’m not surprised that centerpieces conquered the competition, even though they’ve been the subject of the majority of our Non-Floral Fridays

Lily Allen – Not Fair

This song cracks me right up; On the topic of disappointing lays, few songs match Not Fair .  Today’s post comes from Lily Allen , a singer/songwriter who exploded onto the UK scene in 2007.  Her debut album, Alright, Still , was nominated for the Best British Album award at the 2007 BRIT Awards , and for the Best New Artist award at the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards .  The album was also nominated for a 2008 Grammy Award in the category of Best Alternative Music Album .  The song in question today can be found on Allen’s sophomore album It’s Not Me, It’s You , released earlier this year. oh he treats me with respect he says he loves me all the time he calls me fifteen times a day he likes to make sure that I’m fine you know I’ve never met a man whose made me feel quite so secure hes not like all them other boys they’re all so dumb and immature there’s just one thing that’s getting in the way when we go up to bed you’re just not good it’s such a shame I look into your eyes I want to get to know you and then you make this noise and its apparent it’s all over it’s not fair and I think your really mean I think your really mean yes I think your really mean oh your supposed to care but you never make me scream you never make me scream oh it’s not fair and it’s really not ok it’s really not ok it’s really not ok oh your supposed to care but all you do is take all you do is take well I lie here in the wet patch in the middle of the bed I’m feeling pretty damn hard done by, I spent ages giving head then I remember all the nice things that you’ve ever said to me maybe I’m just overreacting, maybe your the one for me there’s just one thing that’s getting in the way when we go up to bed you’re just not good it’s such a shame I look into your eyes I want to get to know you and then you make this noise and its apparent it’s all over it’s not fair and I think your really mean I think your really mean yes I think your really mean oh your supposed to care but you never make me scream you never make me scream oh it’s not fair and it’s really not ok it’s really not ok it’s really not ok oh your supposed to care but all you do is take all you do is take there’s just one thing that’s getting in the way when we go up to bed you’re just not good it’s such a shame I look into your eyes I want to get to know you and then you make this noise and its apparent it’s all over it’s not fair and I think your really mean I think your really mean yes I think your really mean oh your supposed to care but you never make me scream you never make me scream oh it’s not fair and it’s really not ok it’s really not ok it’s really not ok oh your supposed to care but all you do is take all you do is take Reviews: Alright, Still , It’s Not Me, It’s You , Not Fair Related posts: OK Go & Bonerama – Rock ‘n’ Roll Suicide (David Bowie Cover) Bloc Party – Like Eating Glass Metric – Live it out Stars – Take Me to the Riot Arctic Monkeys – Fluorescent Adolescent

Weezer – Kids/Poker Face (MGMT/Lady Gaga Cover)

Today’s song comes to us from the American alt-rock band that monopolized my Discman from age 13-16.  While perusing Twitter this morning, I came across a twoot/tweet? from Stereogum highlighting this video, which was released via  Weezer ’s YouTube account yesterday; The original story can be found here .  The video features spliced together concert footage as a backing to Weezer’s take on MGMT ’s Kids and Lady Gaga ’s Poker Face .  Although this cover likely won’t leave an imprint on music history, it’s fun, it’s Weezer, and it isn’t Troublemaker . You were a child, crawlin’ on your knees toward it

Cake – Guitar

I’m pretty psyched to see Bruno tonight; In fact, it’s been a long time since I’ve been this excited for a movie.  While I wait for Julie to get home from work I thought I’d throw another tune up for everyone today.  It’s been awhile since I’ve dove into the iPod and pulled out an oldie, so that was the goal for tonight.  Guitar is  another classic from the American indie/alt-rock band Cake ’s 1998 release Prolonging the Magic .  The album would peak at position 33 on the Billboard 200 in 1998 and, like the band’s previous release Fashion Nugget , would go platinum.

Hey Rosetta! – Red Heart

I’ve spent the better part of this morning recovering from my annual visit to the Calgary Stampede.  A visit that, this year, started off harmlessly in the beer gardens with Julie, but somehow ended with me rocking out in some greasy pub with a local cover band at 3am; If, by chance, the people who invited me to Denny’s for beer and Moons Over My Hammy are reading this, I apologize for bailing.  Anyways, today’s tune is coming from another 2009 Polaris Music Prize shortlisted album.  Red Heart can be found on Hey Rosetta! ’s second album Into Your Lungs (and around in your heart and on through your blood) , released in June of last year.  The album was also awarded top spot, and $25,000, at the inaugural Verge Music Awards .

Joel Plaskett – Deny, Deny, Deny

The highly anticipated short-list for this year’s Polaris Music Prize was released this week, viewable here .  I chose to ignore this until today as I was quite disappointed that my prediction regarding the Japandroids ‘ Post-Nothing  was completely incorrect.  However, I am now over it and would like to highlight one of the artists that did make the cut this year.  Deny, Deny, Deny can be found on Joel Plaskett ’s second Polaris short-listed album Three .  This particular version of the song was recorded live in the Fuel 90.3 studio here in Calgary, and features gorgeous backing vocals from Rose Cousins and Ana Egge .

The Breeders – Do you love me now?

Once again, the Calgary Sled Island music festival caught me off guard and opened my eyes to another fantastic band.  Chris and I (and Dave) were fortunate enough to see The Breeders live at Olympic Plaza, and boy was it something.  The combination of dual female vocals and an awesome stage presence made for a great show; I was particularly impressed with their version of Happiness Is A Warm Gun by The Beatles which can be found here . The Breeders are an American indie/alt-rock band consisting, presently, of Kim Deal from the Pixies , her sister Kelley Deal, as well as several interchanging members.   Do you love me now
