This past November, Wood supported the latest EP with his first headlining tour through Western Canada, accompanied by Atlantic Canadian singer/songwriter Rose Cousins ; Cousins, along with Ana Egge , served as the backing vocal tandem on Joel Plaskett ’s award-winning 2009 release Three .

Here’s a fun little activity for everyone: The next time you have nothing to do, grab the blankets off your bed, throw them across your couch/coffee table creating a fort of sorts, shut off every light in your house/apartment, climb in with a flashlight, and listen to the new Timber Timbre album; friends of mine will know this activity as “Saturday Night”. Though I’m only half-serious, there is a certain quality to Taylor Kirk’s indie-folk project that begs to be consumed in a manner that compliments the strange atmosphere the work creates. Lay Down in the Tall Grass can be found on said new album, a self-titled release that hit shelves in June of last year.

Consisting of frontman Shane Nelken, Tygh Runyan (Beans) on guitar, Tony Koelwyn (Bossanova) on drums, and Chris Mitchell who plays with the Vancouver Symphony on trumpet and keyboards, The Awkward Stage have two full-length releases to their name since forming in 2006. Retro Chic Super 8 Wedding Film From Richard Israel
I’ve got a quick Christmas Eve post for everyone today, before the circus known as the Ukrainian Christmas Feast begins at my family’s place. With all the recent hoopla surrounding a possible Arcade Fire release in 2010, now seems like a good time to post another tune from the band. If you haven’t heard the aforementioned hoopla, early on in December Marcus Mumford of Mumford and Sons revealed that producer Markus Dravs had been working with Arcade Fire for the last 6 months.

More quality Canadian content coming from the west coast today, this time via the indie/alt-rock duo Kristen Cudmore and Gregor Phillips; otherwise known as Language Arts. Originally from the other Canadian coast, Nova Scotia (I suppose we have a northern coast as well), the duo’s biography describes their latest album as “celebrating obscurities and word entanglements with poetic poise, paired with an alt-rock foundation yet fleshed out with classical instrumentation”; that’s exactly how I described them to a friend of mine today oddly enough.

Vancouver’s indie-rock/alt-country ensemble Ox are back this year, with their 3rd full-length release “Burnout”. The album, released on November 10th of this year, follows up the band’s 2006 effort “American Lo-Fi”. Today’s song is the title-track from Burnout, and is a fine example of the dusky Americana-flannel sort of vibe the band is capable of conjuring up.
