Hayden – Let’s Break Up

Defiant to the bitter end, Hayden delivers a fine piece of scorned indie/folk love-rock with Let’s Break Up .  Found on Paul Hayden Desser’s 2009 full-length release The Place Where We Lived , the song offers a number of lines that should be immediately written down for use if ever on the shittier side of a break-up.  Like Hayden’s previous 7 full-length efforts, The Place Where We Lived was released via his recording label Hardwood Records .

Buck 65 – Blood Of A Young Wolf

2009 brought the debut album from Rich Terfry (the man behind the Buck 65 moniker) and his newest collaborator, Belgian producer Joëlle Phuong Minh Lê.  The electronic/hip-hop project, known as Bike for Three! , released More Heart Than Brains this past summer to almost exclusive acclaim.  Today’s song is not from that album, nor is it from the Bike for Three! project

We Are The City – Astronomers

Really fantastic song up today from the Kelowna, British Columbia progressive indie-rock trio We Are The City.  Originally formed in 2006 under the name “Seraph”, the band changed their name to “The City” in 2007, and then added the all important “We Are”  in May of 2008.  Consisting of Cayne McKenzie on vocals and keys, David Menzel on guitar, and Andy Huculiak on drums, We Are The City deliver a completely unexpected, but welcomly familiar, sound

Chad VanGaalen – Molten Light

Up tonight is another haunting installment from Calgary’s favorite indie/experimental-rock artist Chad VanGaalen . VanGaalen demonstrates his talent as an animator/illustrator with the video that accompanies Molten Light , and allows us to be pleasantly horrified both visually and sonically.  The song itself can be found on VanGaalen’s 3rd full-length effort Soft Airplane , released in September of 2008 via Flemish Eye and Sub Pop record labels

First song from Tim Barry’s “28th and Stonewall” (Suburban Home Records, January 26)

Tim Barry’s last record was arguably one of the best records of 2008/09. It’s simple honesty in both its music and lyrics made it a staple here at casa Songs:Illinois. I expect the same from the new record

Timber Timbre – Lay Down in the Tall Grass

Here’s a fun little activity for everyone:  The next time you have nothing to do, grab the blankets off your bed, throw them across your couch/coffee table creating a fort of sorts, shut off every light in your house/apartment, climb in with a flashlight, and listen to the new Timber Timbre album; friends of mine will know this activity as “Saturday Night”.  Though I’m only half-serious, there is a certain quality to Taylor Kirk’s indie-folk project that begs to be consumed in a manner that compliments the strange atmosphere the work creates.   Lay Down in the Tall Grass can be found on said new album, a self-titled release that hit shelves in June of last year.

City and Colour – The Girl

I haven’t listened to a lot of Dallas Green / City and Colour in about 6 months.  This is due in part to a self-inflicted saturation of the project in 2008 and early 2009, and in part to my discovery of Dan Mangan last year, who has fared quite admirably in satisfying my moody acoustic/folk-rock needs

Hawksley Workman – We’ll Make Time

After a relatively quiet 2009 (It would be nice if my relatively quiet years included an album I produced being shortlisted for the Polaris Prize ), Hawksley Workman is poised once again for a big year; the Polaris-shortlisted album Workman produced was Hey Rosetta! ’s masterpiece Into Your Lungs (and around in your heart and on through your blood) .  Workman’s 11th full-length album “Meat” is scheduled for a January 19th release, which will be followed by Workman’s 12th full-length album “Milk”, which will be released digitally over a 5-month period.   We’ll Make Time was the first preview track released from Meat and is an absolute powerhouse of a song

Review: Maybelline Line Stylist vs. Tarte EmphasEYES

Please note: I often record my videos in multiples, usually five or six in one day. If I am wearing the same clothes or makeup in more than one video, that is why. This video was recorded some time prior to the day it was uploaded and so I may not remember what eye shadows or lip color I’m wearing

We Have Our Processional Music!

After nailing down our venue last spring, we knew we needed to really have a plan for our ceremony music, since amplified music isn’t allowed outside at the ceremony (but we do get a small mic and speaker so people can hear our vows). I did some initial research into acoustic bands, but quickly realized they were just out of our budget, considering we only needed someone to play for about 10-15 minutes before the ceremony, for our processional and the recessional. So, we’d only need them for about half an hour—max

Colorado Weddings From Rising Moon Videos

When we asked Style Me Pretty’s LBB cinematographers to send us one of their favorite films from this past year, I have to confess, I had no clue what the difference between a highlight or a trailer was. Might not sound like a big deal to you, but for me, a blog editor, that’s pretty sad. And I was pretty embarrassed to ask anyone about it.

Arcade Fire – Neighborhood #2 (Laika)

I’ve got a quick Christmas Eve post for everyone today, before the circus known as the Ukrainian Christmas Feast begins at my family’s place.  With all the recent hoopla surrounding a possible Arcade Fire release in 2010, now seems like a good time to post another tune from the band.  If you haven’t heard the aforementioned hoopla, early on in December Marcus Mumford of Mumford and Sons revealed that producer Markus Dravs had been working with Arcade Fire for the last 6 months.

Prairie Cat – Just Cuz

Today’s song comes from the Kelowna solo artist Cary Pratt, and his solo project Prairie Cat; see what he did there?   Just Cuz can be found on Pratt’s most recent album “It Began/Ended With Sparks”, which appears to have been released digitally late in October of this year, and physically early in December.  The song delivers a story about a breakup, or breakups, in way that is refreshingly sardonic over sappy.
