Judge Orders 25-Year-Old To Pay RIAA $675,000 For Downloading 30 Songs

A judge has awarded the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) $675,000 in the Sony v. Tenenbaum filing sharing case, in which 25-year old Joel Tenenbaum was convicted of downloading MP3s from the file-sharing site Kazaa while in college. While the substantial reward could discourage a few future file-sharers from downloading music illegally, we think it’s unlikely it will encourage the RIAA to bring more suits — given comments made by the lobbying group in Aug.

Mother Mother – O My Heart

So we had one of the most insane  thunderstorms I’ve ever witnessed in Calgary last night.  So insane in fact, that when it woke me up I was certain we were under some kind of attack.  After regaining my composure, and putting down my golf club, I found myself on the couch listening to some tunes.  O My Heart is the title-track from Mother Mother ’s sophomore album , released in September of 2008.  More recently, the band has been nominated for the 2nd annual Verge Music Award in both “Artist of the Year” and “Album of the Year” categories; If you want to help decide the winners, voting is open to the public until August 31st  here . Oh my heart, it’s a fish out of water Oh my heart, it’s a fish on the rocks and it bakes in the bad sun Oh my heart, it’s a rock in the gutter Oh my heart, it’s a rock and great boulder and stuck in the gutter And I throw my heart back to the ocean But it don’t go far, it come back floating And I watch it wash it up with the dead fish But it ain’t quite dead, it just is like this Oh my heart, it’s a house in tornado, Oh my heart, it’s a house in the sky in the eye of tornado Oh my heart, it’s a roof in El nino Oh my heart, it’s a roof made of straw in the jaw of El nino And I pour my heart a new foundation But it don’t set far, it just stays shaking And I scratch my name, I scratch my name in But it don’t set heart, it gets mixed back in Bam bam bam, bam bam bam, bam bam bam, bam… Oh my heart, it’s a fish out of water Oh my heart, it’s a rock in the gutter Oh my heart, it’s the black in a rainbow Oh my heart, it’s so damn so cold, so damn cold And I throw my heart into the fire ‘Cos I want to set my heart on fire And I watch it try befriending embers But the ice don’t melt in mid-December Oh my heart, it’s a fish out of water Oh my heart, it’s a fish on the rocks and it bakes in the bad sun Related posts: Hey Rosetta! – Red Heart Talking Heads – Once in a Lifetime Wolf Parade – I’ll Believe in Anything Tokyo Police Club – Your English Is Good Stars – One More Night (Your Ex-Lover Remains Dead)

ahh, the proms (the non-stressful and free kind)

Every year at this time of year, the BBC puts on what is formally known as the Henry Wood Promenade Concerts , they are a series of concerts, mostly classical, and are lovely.  And, thanks to the BBC iPlayer, easy to catch up on when you want some world class music. One of the parts of the Proms I like best is the chance I get to hear some new-to-me classical pieces that are scattered within the more famous ones that headline many of the concerts.  (Although my classical education is certainl

What is Your World Made of and Why Does it Matter? a Brief Introduction to Law of Attraction

What is your world made of? Some may answer, “Earth, sea, sky, insects, animals and people,” and if they think for a few more seconds, they’ll probably add, “And the universe too!” All that is true but what is everything made of? Matter! Everything in our world is made of matter and all matter, right down to subatomic particles consists of energy.

Stop Walking Past and Come On In

Caffino 1185 King Street West 416-588-9010 Dinner for two with all taxes, tip, wine and coffee: $110 I’ve walked past Caffino a hundred times – literally – without ever going in. When I worked in Liberty Village I would consider grabbing my morning coffee from there, but the Roastery was closer to work and on cold winter mornings, travel time really did count. Even living 5 minutes away wasn’t compelling enough, especially when hot new places started popping up nearby.

Gustav Holst’s “The Planets” by Cornell University

If you like classical music, and in particular the Holst suite “The Planets,” then I encourage you to follow this link to the iTunes store. Cornell University has performed this music and made it available on iTunes free of charge.  I don’t know if this was a mistake or a limited time offer, but it’s worth checking it out. I’ve only listened to the first few minutes of it, so I can’t make a judgment as to the quality

How Baby Music Can Make Your Child Smarter

Baby music and intelligence – it’s been a source of continued studies for both childcare experts and scientists alike. As parents become more invested in giving their children the tools they need for exceptional social, mental and physical development – even while still in the womb – many psychologists and scientists have become intrigued by the conjecture that listening to the right baby music can not only make your child smarter; it can even help your child become a more socially intelligent a

Marcus Johnson | Poetically Justified

Marcus Johnson – Poetically Justified As the heartbreaking lyrics declares from one of Elton John’s classic “Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word”: “It is a sad, sad situation.”   In this case, it has nothing to do with a frustrating love relationship, but it is the current state of contemporary jazz mostly in the U.S. east coast region from record labels shutting down shop or lack of radio station play.   However, there is a certified talent who continues to dream big in the na

Michael Jackson finds new fans in investors

By Adam Satariano, Bloomberg.com Michael Jackson, the Grateful Dead and “The Sound of Music” are finding new fans in pension funds, private equity and banks convinced that old hits will play on as technology expands the way people use music. Competition is increasing for music publishing catalogs and the income they generate from stores, radio and Web play, ads and movies. Empire Of The Sun – Walking On A Dream

I played the first 14 holes of my round today 4-over par.  In spectacular fashion, I then proceeded to play the last 4 holes at 6-over par, limping into the clubhouse with an 82; 82 or not, I’m still fairly confident that a professional golf career is a possibility.  Today’s track comes to us from the Australian electronic duo Empire of the Sun , and they’re debut album Walking on a Dream .  The title-track single was released in August of last year and went on to earn platinum status in Australia, selling over 70,000 copies.  One of the things I’m really digging about this track is the “crunchiness” of the vocals throughout the verses; It reminds me a lot of MGMT , which has to be considered a good thing. Walking on a dream How can I explain Talking to myself Will I see again We are always running for the thrill of it thrill of it Always pushing up the hill searching for the thrill of it On and on and on we are calling out and out again Never looking down I’m just in awe of what’s in front of me Is it real now When two people become one I can feel it When two people become one Thought I’d never see The love you found in me Now it’s changing all the time Living in a rhythm where the minutes working overtime Catch me I’m falling down Catch me I’m falling down Don’t stop just keep going on I’m your shoulder lean upon So come on deliver from inside All we got is tonight that is right till first light Reviews: Walking On A Dream Related posts: Phoenix – 1901 Chairlift – Bruises The Limousines – Very Busy People

An Idiot’s Guide to Music – 1

By Anjum Altaf I call architecture frozen music – Goethe I stumbled upon this quote as a teenager and fell in love with it without understanding it at all, a phenomenon not uncommon as I learnt later when I fell in love with a human being – loving and hating comes so much easier than understanding. The quote stayed with me for years – stuck in diaries, propped up on desks, hanging from walls, scribbled in notes to people I loved but did not understand – without yielding its mystery. The

That’s Momgenius: Rockabye Baby Music

Posted by AVM I find that toys, clothes, and other paraphernalia for children are so fleeting.  One moment that bottle warmer is essential, and the next it’s packed away, and life carries on without it.  Peek-a-boo blocks are fantastic for keeping baby’s attention – for about 4 or 5 months – and then they’re as boring as can be. The clothes – well, I feel like I’m constantly clearing out my daughter’s drawers and closet to pack away yesterday’s duds.   Life moves so fast in the first few yea
